Set out as the Flying Jayhawks journey through treasures of Portugal & Southern Spain. Travel through the Iberian Peninsula to the intimate lodgings of Spain’s paradores. You’ll also see Portugal’s pousadas: most noteworthy are the medieval monasteries and fortresses. Feel Iberia’s rich Roman and Moorish past in contrast to its vibrant contemporary life. This small group journey is limited to 24 travelers.
First, the 15-day trip begins in Lisbon which includes the majestic Mosteiro dos Jerónimos monastery, iconic Belém Tower and the lovely National Palace of Queluz.
Then, travel through the picturesque Alentejo region to one of Portugal’s finest pousadas in Evora. It’s certainly a treasure-trove of Roman and Moorish heritage and a UNESCO site.
Next is Mérida, a Spanish town boasting outstanding Roman ruins. While in Spain’s Andalusia region, discover the beauty and romance of Seville, the place that inspired Carmen and Don Giovanni. Then visit its renowned Catédral, the world’s largest Gothic building. Tour the Old Quarter which was built around the Mezquita mosque in Cordoba, also a cultural gem and UNESCO site.
After a two-night stay in charming Ronda atop scenic El Tajo Gorge, travel to Granada. This is the former Moorish stronghold set in the Sierra Nevada. Tour its extraordinary fortress, the Alhambra, and the splendid Generalife gardens.
Finally, a visit to medieval Toledo offers a tour highlight before a final three-night stay in Madrid. Most noteworthy, highlights include the Royal Palace, the world-renowned Prado museum, and vast Plaza Mayor.
