Chapters and Clubs F.A.Q.

Q. Does every graduate of the University of Kansas automatically become an Association member?
No. Although every KU graduate and former student achieves alumni status, they do not become members of the Association unless they pay member dues. Dues-paying alumni receive a membership card, a subscription to Kansas Alumni magazine and many other benefits not available to non-members.

Q. Can people who never attended the University of Kansas join the Association?
Yes. KU is the flagship school in Kansas. Therefore, many citizens feel a tremendous amount of loyalty to it even though they may have never attended a class. Any individual or couple who is willing to pay membership dues will be welcomed!

Q. Are the Alumni Association and the Endowment Association the same organization?
No. Although, the Alumni Association is a dues-based organization that also receives charitable support. The Alumni Association exists to support the University of Kansas by keeping alumni and friends connected to the KU community through information and events. The Endowment Association exists to raise funds for the University of Kansas.

Q. Can a local chapter or club charge membership dues to help fund more activities?
No. Chapters are one of the many benefits members receive with the payment of annual Association dues. Local chapters and clubs may not charge additional membership dues or maintain private bank accounts. Chapters and clubs may hold events and fund-raisers, but those funds must be approved and managed by the Association.

Q. Does belonging to my local club/chapter automatically make me a member of the KU Alumni Association?
No. You must pay annual dues to the Association to become a member. Membership offers many benefits and is a wonderful way to stay in contact with KU.

Q. Who can obtain a list of alumni in our area?
Lists are administered through the Association. Chapter and Club leaders may consult with our staff for the purpose of promoting the Association and affiliated events.

Q. Who will be invited to events that our chapter/club sponsors?

For most events, invitations will be sent to all Association members within a designated area. Anyone who chooses to receive chapter e-mail updates will also receive these invitations. Event information will also be posted on our Web site, www.kualumni.org.

Q. Are University speakers available for chapter/club events?
Our staff will work with chapter leaders to secure speakers from the University. Potential speakers include the Chancellor, deans or athletic representatives. If you have a particular request, please contact the Association as soon as possible. These KU ambassadors have busy schedules (especially KU athletic representatives), so our staff will need considerable time to coordinate with their schedules. Clubs, although Association organizations, are not official charters. Assistance in obtaining speakers is only available to area chapters. We encourage clubs to become chapters to take advantage of our support.

Q. Will the Association send a representative to our event?
Our goal is to visit each alumni chapter at least once every academic year. Decisions to attend will be made based on the purpose of the event and the number of alumni in attendance.

Q. Can I purchase tickets to athletic events from the KU Alumni Association?
Contact Kansas Athletics to purchase football and basketball tickets. Occasionally, alumni events in conjuction with Kansas Athletics include the purchase of group tickets. Please check the alumni events section of the Web site for more information. If tickets are available, information will be listed in the event description.
