Pharmacists, often the front line of defense for health care issues, are a rare commodity in some parts of Kansas.
Six counties have no pharmacy. Another 30 counties have only one. That means a lot of driving for residents wanting to fill prescriptions or get other medical advice.
The KU School of Pharmacy, the only pharmacy school in the state, devised a plan to address the need for additional pharmacists across Kansas. It would construct a new building on West Campus in Lawrence to expand the number of students who could attend, in addition to building a new facility in Wichita to serve students who want to remain closer to home in other parts of the state.
But first, University officials needed to tell the story of why the new facilities were needed. They turned to alumni through Jayhawks for Higher Education, the advocacy arm of the KU Alumni Association, to spread the word throughout the state and to legislators.
The effort was successful, and the new School of Pharmacy in Lawrence (pictured at right) will open this fall. The Wichita facility isn’t far behind.
This is the power of KU alumni.
