Student Alumni Leadership Board (SALB) members serve as the official student representatives and volunteers of the KU Alumni Association. SALB supports the KU Alumni Association in its mission to strengthen the University by informing, engaging and mobilizing the KU community. SALB members are the link between past, present and future Jayhawks, and represent the University at various functions throughout the year. Members also facilitate spirit functions, serve as campus ambassadors and organize community service projects. As a board member, you have the opportunity to interact with some of the best student leaders, campus officials and alumni. The SALB office is located in the Adams Alumni Center. This organization is for students who bleed crimson and blue!
New members are selected each semester. To see a list of members on the spring 2010 Student Alumni Leadership Board, visit the SALB member directory. For more information, send us an e-mail at salb@ku.edu, call Stefani at 785-864-4760, or click the links below.
Dinner with a Dozen 'Hawks
Dinner with a Dozen 'Hawks brings 12 prestigious alumni to the Alumni Center to have dinner with members of the Student Alumni Association. The event offers students the chance to network, build relationships with alumni and enjoy a catered meal. Each alumnus is matched with a student who is interested in his or her field, or is on a similar academic path. This event complements KU career services and provides an additional venue for mentoring opportunities. Topics to be discussed during dinner include job experiences, interviewing tips, job search advice, career advice and "what I wish I had known before graduating."
Finals Dinner
Finals Dinner is an exclusive event for our Student Alumni Association members held the Monday of finals week for both the fall and spring semesters. Members enjoy a five-star meal, a relaxing back massage and some downtime to chat with friends.
Grad Grill
Grad Grill is a barbecue held for graduating seniors at the Alumni Center. A barbecue meal is catered in, and local businesses provide prizes to be given away throughout the night. Grad Grill celebrates students' time at KU and welcomes them into alumni status.
Home Football Fridays
Home Football Fridays is an award-winning event that SALB and the Alumni Association host the Friday before every home football game. From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., students enjoy free food, beverages and music. Home Football Fridays is one of the most popular events that SALB organizes, and is open to all (and only) KU students.
Ice Cream Social
The Ice Cream Social is held at the Adams Alumni Center during 'Hawk Week (the first week of classes at KU). Students enjoy music, free ice cream, giveaways, Big Jay and Baby Jay, the spirit squads and lots of school spirit and tradition. It is a chance for the Alumni Association and SALB to welcome freshmen to the Hill.
Alcohol-Free Student Tailgate
SALB hosts an annual KU Student Tailgate on the Hill before one of the home football games. Leadership Board members team up with Student Union Activities and Rock Chalk Responsible Choices to throw the alcohol-free event for all KU students, who receive free food and drinks, and can play lawn games before kickoff. Door prizes are always included.
Wieners for Seniors
Wieners for Seniors is a promotional event for Grad Grill held in late April on Wescoe Beach. Seniors can stop by and try their hand at hot dog golf and hot dog basketball, and enjoy a free hot dog lunch.
Celebrate KU
Celebrate KU is an event organized, sponsored and staffed by the Leadership Board to help students celebrate the birthday of their beloved University. Each September, SALB takes birthday cake to Wescoe Beach to share with fellow Jayhawks. Students also can sign an oversized birthday card for KU.
Class Ring
Members of the Leadership Board help promote the KU class ring program to juniors, seniors, graduate students and alumni. In addition to hosting information tables on Wescoe Beach and at the Kansas Union, SALB sponsors a Ring Ceremony at the end of each school year where students are officially presented with their ring in front of friends and family.
Community Service
SALB organizes and/or participates in one community service project per month to reach out to the Lawrence community. The service projects also give SALB members the opportunity to get to know one another on a different level and strengthen the bonds of camaraderie. Past projects include Day of Caring, trick-or-treat for non-perishable food items, park clean-up and Relay for Life.
Kansas Honors Program
SALB sends a representative to every Kansas Honors Program across the state. At these events, the top 10 percent of each Kansas high school senior class is recognized for their achievements by receiving a dictionary from the KU Alumni Association. The SALB representative travels with Alumni Association staff members to assist at the event and represent the KU student body.
Tailgates
SALB members take part in Game Day at the Adams tailgates, where alumni gather to prepare for home football games. Leadership Board members enjoy a free meal and can meet alumni from all over the country. Each member also has the chance to volunteer at the chancellor's tailgate held at the Outlook, the chancellor's campus home. These tailgates prove to be a favorite among SALB members.
New Member Education
After the application and interview process is complete, each selected SALB member takes part in new member education. Members spend three meetings learning more about the Association and SALB with a behind-the-scenes tour of the Adams Alumni Center and a trip to a secret location on campus with the SALB executive board and the president of the Alumni Association.
Scrapbook
The SALB scrapbook is one of the best ways to tell people about what SALB does, and to demonstrate how much fun the Leadership Board has as a group. Members work on the scrapbook all year long. See the 2009 edition here.
