Several far-flung Jayhawks recently came together for dinner at the Rogue Valley Manor in Medford, Ore. John and Marty Strong assembled the group; though they did not attend KU, they are Jayhawks by virtue of John’s family heritage: His grandfather Frank Strong led the University as chancellor from 1902 to 1920. John also taught at the KU School of Law from 1964 to 1967.
The group also included Keith Stewart, c’59, wearing his Jayhawk T-shirt; David, b’56, and Betsy Burgett; Damon, e’53, and Judy Finke Simpson, d’56; Bill, c’47, and Martha Johnson; and Jack and June Porter Rittenhouse, d’53.
Nostalgia and memories abounded and the group even got a few “Rock Chalks” and a rendition of the Jayhawk fight song to clear out dining room at the manor, a continuing care retirement community of about 1,000 residents situated high on a hill similar to Mount Oread. Aside from being a retreat for Jayhawks, Medford, Ore., is best known as the home of the mail order fruit and gift company Harry & David.
