Today, November 11, is Veterans Day– a day to recognize America’s veterans for their patriotism and willingness to serve and sacrifice.

In 1919, President Wilson designated November 11 as the first commemoration of Armistice Day, and in 1938 the day was designated as a legal holiday. In 1954 the name was changed from Armistice Day to Veterans Day and November 11 became a day to honor veterans of all wars. Click here to read more about the history of Veterans Day.

A Run to Remember

Yesterday, the KU Veterans Alumni Chapter and the Collegiate Veterans Association sponsored “A Run to Remember,” a 5K race that began at Memorial Stadium and traveled through campus past KU’s memorials before returning to the stadium.

The overall top female finisher in yesterday’s run was Amanda Ostreko with a time of 23:12.6, and the overall top male was Jack McDonald with a time of 17:02.9. Congratulations and thank you to all participants! Click here for a full list of race results.

Proceeds from the run will support the KU Wounded Warrior Scholarship Fund and the KU Collegiate Veterans Association. The Wounded Warrior Scholarship Fund provides recipients with financial support necessary for successful academic, personal and professional growth of disabled veterans and their family members.

The Collegiate Veterans Association (CVA) allows KU’s student veterans a forum to meet fellow student veterans, share common experiences, network and ensure the veteran voice is heard on campus.

Veterans Alumni Chapter

The KU Alumni Association sponsors an alumni chapter for veterans. The mission of the Veterans Alumni Chapter is to recognize, honor, support and celebrate combined service in an affirmative and apolitical manner.

If you attended KU and served in the military, please click here to complete a short form about your service so we can make sure that you’re included in future announcements to veterans. You can also connect with other KU veterans through a Facebook group.
