Association membership
Annual license plate fees are paid in addition to membership dues. Apply online to join or renew a membership to the KU Alumni Association.

Qualifications
Applicants must be Kansas residents who own passenger vehicles or light trucks that are registered for weight of 20,000 lbs. or less.

Cost
Applicants are required to pay an annual logo royalty fee of $50 or $60 per vehicle to the KU Alumni Association. The Association will issue an Educational Institutional License Plate Certification. The KU license plate will be issued upon vehicle registration and payment of the regular state license fee to your county treasurer. The county treasurer will collect the annual certificate when you apply for or renew your tag. There is a one-time special plate issuance fee of $45.50 to manufacture the plate. According to the current statute, this fee is valid for the five-year plate cycle. The fee will be payable to the county treasurer when you pick up your tag.

Sorry, no special names or numbers
The legislation authorizing university plates does not provide for personalization of tags with words or phrases. Tag numbers will be issued randomly. Vehicle transfers are subject to the Department of Motor Vehicle's rules and regulations. Tags can be kept if the transfer is deemed legal. If not, a new plate will be issued.

Renewal schedule
If within 60 days of the license plate renewal month (based on the first letter of the last name), the certificate will be issued for next year. Take the certificate to the county treasurer after the renewal packet from the state has arrived in the mail. If the renewal month is more than 60 days away, the certificate will be issued for the current year. Take the certificate to the county treasurer with the old plate to switch plates. However, a second royalty fee will be due during your renewal month. The Association advises against incurring a double royalty fee in a calendar year unless you are several months away from the scheduled renewal.

Kansas Honors Program
Since 1971, this KU tradition has recognized Kansas high school seniors who rank academically in the top 10 percent of their class. Selections are made regardless of curricula, majors, occupational plans or higher-education goals. Each Kansas Honor Scholar receives a certificate, a commemorative dictionary and CD, and an invitation to one of 40 receptions throughout the state. Proceeds from the University of Kansas License Plate program will help fund the Kansas Honors Program.
