Fans braved the cold weather Thursday morning in Kansas City as the KU men’s basketball team prepared to take on Oklahoma State in their first game of the Phillips 66 Big 12 Men’s Basketball Championship.
The Alumni Association, Kansas Athletics, and the Williams Education Fund hosted a pregame party at No Other Pub. The festivities included giveaways, KU merchandise, and a pep rally featuring the Marching Jayhawks and the Spirit Squad.
Brian Hanni, the Voice of the Jayhawks, hosted a pep rally on the main stage of the KC Live! block. A video celebrating 14 straight Big 12 Conference titles played on the big screen, and Sheahon Zenger, director of athletics, and Chancellor Doug Girod also gave remarks before handing the spotlight back to Hanni.
The Jayhawks knocked off Oklahoma State in the quarterfinals—a victory that was especially sweet after losing to the Cowboys twice during the regular season.
The team takes on the Kansas State Wildcats at 6 p.m. Friday, Mach 9, in a third reprisal of the Sunflower Showdown. The Alumni Association will again co-host a pregame party at No Other Pub starting at 3 p.m.
After Saturday’s 74-72 win over Texas Tech, the 2017-18 Kansas men’s basketball team clinched a 14th consecutive Big 12 regular-season championship.
The streak, which began with the 2004-05 team, is now the longest in NCAA history, passing UCLA’s 13 consecutive Pac-10 titles from 1967-79. The conference title is KU’s 61st, extending its own NCAA record.
Kansas Athletics commemorated the accomplishment with a video featuring the people that made KU’s legendary run possible:
KU’s tradition-rich basketball program has been known by its straightforward, no-nonsense uniform scheme for decades. In recent years, however, alternate uniform schemes have become the trend, helping to raise licensing revenue and excitement among fans and recruits. KU alumni and fans have enjoyed–or endured–a variety of fashion experiments, including the infamous adidas “camo” uniforms we featured in 2013.
This year, adidas opted for a new look for the Jayhawks, just for the 2015 post-season. While adidas promotes the new duds using the hashtags #JayhawksDestiny and #MadeInMarch, some fans have referred to this year’s edition as the “cumberbund” uniforms. What do you think, Jayhawks? You be the judge.
Ranked No. 1 in the country after winning its first Big 12 outdoor track and field championship May 5 at Baylor, KU women’s track and field is beginning preparations for the NCAA Outdoor Championships, June 5-8 at the University of Oregon’s hallowed Hayward Field in Eugene.
“I believe Oregon will be tough at their home,” coach Stanley Redwine says. “We need any kind of support we can get out there, but I like our chances.”
Stay tuned for news regarding possible Alumni Association rallies at the NCAA Championships, but regardless, if you’re near enough to Eugene to make the trip, please consider making plans to be on hand to cheer on the Jayhawks as they attempt to win KU’s first NCAA title since men’s basketball in 2008.
Senior sprinter Paris Daniels, who scored a meet-high 23 points with gold in the 200 meters and silver in the 100 as well as running the anchor leg on KU’s victorious 4×100 and 4×400 relay teams, on Wednesday was named Big 12 Outstanding Female Performer of the Year. Redwine followed up his Big 12 indoor coach of the year honor–earned after KU won the conference’s indoor team title in January–by being named Big 12 Women’s Coach of the Year.

The KU men’s basketball team beat the Iowa State Cyclones tonight to advance to the Big 12 Championship title game. It was a highly-anticipated third meeting this season between the two teams, and the atmosphere in the Sprint Center was tense– especially after freshman Ben McLemore and coach Bill Self were both called for technical fouls in the first half.
KU prevailed, however, and will head to the title game for the tenth time in the 17-year history of the event, where they’ll take on the Kansas State Wildcats.
